What is a health coach?
You have probably been hearing the term “health coach” more and more. The health coaching business has grown a great deal in the past many years. Health and wellness coaches are popping up in doctor’s offices, gyms, spas, and private practices all over the country. Health and wellness coaches will play a major role in the future of health care.
So what exactly is a health coach?
As a Certified Health and Wellness Coach I help my clients develop more of a holistic mindset when thinking of health and wellness. We not only look at what’s on your plate (food), but also what’s off the plate (lifestyle).
You can eat all the kale in the world and still be unhealthy if other aspects of your life are out of balance. I will guide you and encourage you to find ways to nourish your mind, body, and soul while focusing on food, nutrition, and lifestyle. I will support and encourage you in meeting your personal and wellness goals. I will help you restore balance and health through self-care practices. I am not a nutritionist, dietician, or an MD. I do not diagnose or treat medical conditions. If you are working with a doctor, therapist, dietician, or any other health professional I can work right along side them and help you to meet your desired health goals.
I specialize in helping women struggling with infertility and miscarriages, women that are pregnant, and moms of young children.
Why might someone hire a health coach?
A health coach is invested in the health and happiness of their clients. They don’t just look at the problem and put a bandaid on it. A health coach looks at everything with a holistic mindset.
For example…a woman may want to lose weight, but for some reason she can’t make it happen no matter what she tries. A medical doctor would meet with this woman for 10 minutes and may prescribe a weight loss pill. A dietician may suggest a specific diet to try. A personal trainer may recommend cardio. This is where a health coach is different. Over several weeks, or months, or even a year a health coach will not only discuss food, nutrition, and physical activity with that client, but will also touch on other aspects of her life. Maybe this woman can’t lose weight because of her relationships. She may not have the support she needs from family, friends, and her significant other. Or maybe her career is the problem. She maybe overly stressed, sits all day at a desk, and only gets to eat a bag of chips out of the vending machine on most days. A health coach can help coach this woman into making healthier choices by brainstorming about ways to motivate her or change or improve the situation.
A health coach listens and supports. A health coach offers recommendations and helps to guide the client into achieving their desired goal.
Sessions can be over the phone, over video chat, or in person and last about 60 minutes. Depending on the clients needs sessions can happen weekly, every other week, or once a month. Generally a client may seek the help of a health coach over a span of one month, three months, or six months.
